The opening of the Durango-Mazatlán
Superhighway and the attractions of Durango City confirm the state’s
tourism potential and the need to promote better infrastructure and
advertising, representatives of the Hotel and Motel Association said
during a Monday meeting with Gov. Jorge Herrera Caldera.
Hotel industry spokesman Francisco Martínez said that this sector
alone is seeing close to 1.2 billion pesos ($90.1 million) in annual
business — a huge increase compared to eight years ago, when it only
made 200 million pesos.
According to Martínez, thanks to the promotion of Durango as a
tourist destination in nearby states, weekend visitors regularly come to
the state from Sinaloa, Mazatlán and Torreón, as well as those who come
to do business.
Work is also being done to consolidate Durango City as a site for
conferences and conventions, he added, allowing the city’s hotels to
have an occupation rate of over 50 percent, which he said is very
impressive for Durango.
“Since Jorge Herrera Caldera was state Finance Secretary, he’s always
kept the door open to us and given us all the support needed to make
Durango a tourist destination,” Martínez said. “Really, in those days,
we were barely dreaming about being a tourist destination, and he’s
been helping us since then.”
Martínez said that this support has included finance for building
important highway infrastructure projects, remodeling the historic
downtown district and constructing museums and public plazas.
