Tourism Secretary Claudia Ruiz Massieu flew to London on Sunday ahead
of her participation in the World Travel Market tourism fair.
Today, Ruiz Massieu will officially open Mexico’s booth at the travel
fair, where she will meet with other tourism heads and leading
investors in the sector.
Ruiz Massieu is scheduled to meet with Raleb Rifai, head of the World
Tourism Organization (UNWTO), with whom she will begin to refine the
agenda for World Tourism Day 2014, scheduled to take place in Mexico on
Sept. 27.
She will also attend the T-20 — a forum of tourism ministers that
works in conjunction with the G-20 group of the world’s leading
economies — where she will debate how to reduce the current void that
exists between tourism and aviation policy. Ruiz Massieu will also speak
on the work being carried out by the Mexican government to improve air
travel in that country.
This is the 34th year that the World Travel Market has been held. It
is considered one of the most important tourism events in the global
calendar. This will be the 31st time that Mexico has participated in the
event.
The regions Mexico will promote at the event are Campeche, Mexico City, Durango, Yucatán, Baja California Sur and Quintana Roo.
Ruiz Massieu will give a number of important interviews at the event,
including talks with BBC World, the Financial Times and Foreign
Affairs.
The Mexican Tourism Secretariat (Sectur) has reported periodic
increases in the number of tourists visiting Mexico this year. In
October, the Sectur said that 8 million tourists had visited the country
in the first nine months of the year, compared to 7 million over the
same period the previous year.
U.K. nationals are among the fastest growing groups of visitors to
Mexico. By October this year, 280,000 Brits had visited Mexico. Russian,
Colombian and Chinese tourist numbers are also on the rise.
