Carlos Berdegué Sexton, Vice President of the
Association of Hotels and Tourism Management Mazatlán, which represents
hotels and other lodging establishments the Zona Dorada area and José
Ramón Manguart, President of the Association of Hotels Three Islands,
which represents hotels located along the Malecón, stressed that the
tourism is up and occupancy has rebounded, as expected.
Both men said the Mazatlán-Durango Highway has helped
increase the flow of tourists to Mazatlán from Durango, Torreon, and
from places in the Bajío (lowlands) region of Central México, including
the states of Guanajuato, Querétaro, Aguascalientes, and Jalisco, among
other places. This increase is tourism is resulting in local hotels reporting that they have no vacancies, they said.
Berdegué said his member hotels already have reservations for January and they expect a better season.
They also noted that due to the new Mazatlán-Durango
highway there has been a considerable increase in bookings for the
city’s convention center, resulting in average increase in the occupancy
rate of Mazatlán’s hotels of at least ten points and they said the
expectations for 2014 are even better.
