No New Baseball Stadium, says Governor

Culiacán: Sinaloa Governor Mario López Valdez said yesterday that following the sale of grupo Modelo there will be no new baseball stadium in Mazatlán.

He told media the land for the stadium located beside the Convention Center in the Marina had already been purchased but with the sale of the company the philosophy had changed.

The Governor said he also understood Mazatlán’s Venados baseball team was to be sold and depending on the new owners they would see (if the project would continue).

Mazatlán’s beloved AAA Pacific League Venados baseball team did not have a stellar year. They ended the regular season with a 31-36 record and squeaked into the playoffs only to lose their first four games and be eliminated.

President of the Venados de Mazatlán, Ismael Barros Cebreros, admitted to difficult and complicated regular and playoff seasons this year.

The truth is things did not go as we wished, he said, but every season is a chance to learn and next year they will improve in various aspects, particularly batting.

SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED, STAGE SET FOR 15U BASEBALL WORLD CUP 'SUPER ROUND ROBIN'

The opening round of the 2014 15U Baseball World Cup has concluded, with six of the eighteen participating National Teams advancing to the 'Super Round Robin', which starts tomorrow (6 August) at Teodoro Mariscal Stadium in Mazatlán.

The most elite selection of 15-year-old baseball players in the world have been competing for their countries in the II 15U Baseball World Cup -- the highest level of competition in baseball for this age group -- which began on 31-July across Sinaloa, Mexico in the cities of Culiacan, Los Mochis and Mazatlán.

After an Opening Round-Robin that consisted of forty-give games in five days, Chinese Taipei, Cuba, Mexico, Panama, United States and Venezuela have emerged from group-play as the six nations that will compete for a place in the gold medal final on Sunday, 10 August. 

Chinese Taipei won Group A, registering a record of 5-0 versus Brazil, Czech Republic, Italy, Guatemala and host Mexico. Mexico (4-1) defeated Brazil (3-2) in a key heads-up battle on the final day (4 August) of the Round Robin to join Chinese Taipei as the two nations moving out of Group A to the Super Round Robin semifinal.

The United States (5-0) defeated Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Panama and South Africa to win Group B with a perfect record of (5-0). World No. 13 Panama (4-1) triumphed over No. 2 Japan (3-2) on the final day of the round-robin to earn a place in the Super Round Robin.  

Cuba defeated the defending 15U World Champion, Venezuela -- in addition to Argentina, Australia, Hong Kong, Lithuania -- to finish atop Group C. Venezuela (4-1) rebounded, defeating Australia (3-2) in a decisive match-up to earn Group B's final ticket to the Super Round Robin.

World No. 1 USA versus World No. 3 Cuba will highlight Day 1 of the 'Super Round Robin' (6 August); No. 4 Chinese Taipei will play No. 13 Panama, while No. 10 Venezuela takes on No. 12 Mexico.

Opening round head-to-head contests (i.e., CUB vs. VEN -- MEX vs. TPE -- and PAN vs USA) will carry over and not be repeated, meaning CUB, USA and TPE will start the Super Round Robin with a record of 1-0. MEX, PAN and VEN will start the Super Round Robin with a 0-1 win-loss record and have to play perfect baseball to make it to the gold medal final.

The top two finishers in the 'Super Group', after four days of competition will play for the gold medal on Sunday at 18:00.

A bronze medal match will also be played at 10:00 on Sunday.

Over the next four days in Culiacan, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Germany, Italy and Japan will compete against each other to determine 7-12th place classification.

Czech Republic, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Lithuania, New Zealand and South Africa will be grouped in Los Mochis to compete for 13-18th place.

Mexico, in Group A, will face China Taipei, Italy, Brazil and Czechoslovakia.

With the participation of 360 players from 18 countries representing five continents, the Under 15 World Championship Baseball tournament begins today simultaneously in Mazatlán, Culiacán and Los Mochis.

The Mazatlán official inauguration takes place today at 6:30pm at the Teodoro Mariscal baseball stadium. The tournament runs until August 10 with games being played at both the baseball stadium and Benito Juárez sports complex.

The under 15-year-olds are representing 18 countries from around the world: Mexico, China Taipei, Italy, Brazil, Czechoslovakia, Guatemala, United States, Japan, Panama, Germany, New Zealand, South Africa, Cuba, Venezuela, Australia, Argentina, Hong Kong and Lithuania.

Mexico, in Group A, will face China Taipei, Italy, Brazil and Czechoslovakia and are looking to improve their standing after losing to China Taipei in the 2012 games played in Chihuahua, finishing fourth in that tournament. The tournament was won by Venezuela, followed by Cuba in second and China Taepei in third.

Games begin today at the Teodoro Mariscal baseball stadium at 9am when New Zealand takes on Germany, followed by Japan vs South Africa at 4pm and Panama vs. the United States at 8:30pm.

Alaska Airlines Adds New Flights to Mazatlán

Sinaloa Secretary of Tourism is promoting Mazatlán at the Tourism Fair in Cancún.

Alaska Airlines Vacation vice-president, Don Ritter, announced at the 2014 Tianguis Turístico presently being held in Cancún that beginning in October this year they will add a flight from Los Angeles to Mazatlán, while for November they are considering daily flights to the port during the peak tourism season.

Additionally, the Secretary of Tourism for Sinaloa reported in its press release that Alaska has plans to increase weekly flights from three to six, saying the airline representative acknowledged the work done by authorities to provide a secure destination for tourists.

Larry Chester, president of the charter airline Sun Country Vacations, said included in his company’s plans for 2014 is an increase in the capacity of airplanes flying to Mazatlán from Minneapolis and a focus on increasing flights from Dallas, Texas.

Sunwing charter airline vice-president, Lawrence R. Elliot, pointed out that many tourists from Canada are baseball fans, particularly those from Toronto who support the Bluejays team. With that in mind, the Canadian charter plans to promote packages that include Venado AAA baseball games and cultural events.

The matter of security is not an issue for Canadians from Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Winnipeg, he said, as they have confidence in Mazatlán. (from Noroeste)

MAZATLÁN._ Venados de Mazatlán sostendrá un partido más de preparación hoy en el estadio Teodoro Mariscal, cuando reciban a sus acérrimos rivales deportivos, Tomateros de Culiacán.

El encuentro que será igualmente de beneficio para los damnificados del estado de Sinaloa por los estragos del Huracán Manuel, será a partir de las 19:00 horas.

Prácticamente con este cotejo el equipo cerrará su preparación de cara a la apertura de la Liga Mexicana del Pacífico, misma que se pone en marcha aquí el sábado 12 de este mes con los mismos guindas.

Todavía mañana el cuadro de casa llevará un partido más, pero ya será de carácter de exhibición contra un seleccionado de cantantes y bandas sinaloenses.

El mánager Alfonso "Houston" Jiménez, junto con su coach de pitcheo Félix Tejada, designaron a Miguel Ruiz para iniciar hoy por la noche ante Tomateros, seguido de Mauricio Lara y los extranjeros.

"Vamos a ver a todos los lanzadores extranjeros cómo se encuentran en ese partido, la idea es que nivel se encuentran para ir determinando diferentes situaciones. El derecho Miguel Ruiz será el que abra y después lo hará Mauricio Lara", mencionó Jiménez.

Ayer se celebró por la noche un juego interescuadras, en el que abrió el estadounidense Ryan Hinso y tuvieron acción la totalidad del plantel, incluyendo a los extranjeros.

Separan a Fajardo

La directiva porteña a través de un boletín de prensa anunció que ya no es más Héctor Fajardo su coach de pitcheo.

La decisión de su separación del cargo se dio en mutuo acuerdo entre ambas partes.

En los próximos días se anunciará su sustituto, quien se sabe será un coach con experiencia en este beisbol.
