Alaska Airlines Cancels One Flight to Mazatlán

The airline sent a written notification that the Tuesday Los Angeles-Mazatlán flight is cancelled.

Alaska Airlines, which has been flying from Los Angeles, California to Mazatlán six times a week, notified the Atamsa secretary general that the airline is cancelling one of those flights.

Jesús Román Aguayo Hernández of Atamsa explained to media that the airline sent a written notification that the Tuesday Los Angeles-Mazatlán flight is cancelled. The airline will continue to fly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The notification surprised him, said Aguayo Hernández, since the six day schedule was programmed until March 7.

The Alaska flight leaves Los Angeles at 1:45pm for Mazatlán. The Mazatlán-Los Angeles flight departs the city at 2:40pm.

The secretary general said he hopes the cancellation is temporary and will not affect those planning on visiting Mazatlán. At the moment flights are almost full and on the weekends often over-booked, he commented.

Although he was not advised of the reason for the cancellation, Aguayo Hernández did point out that Delta Airlines also flies from Los Angeles to Mazatlán.

A male American boxing champion will seldom put his belt on the line in his opponent’s backyard - Floyd Mayweather Jr, the world’s highest paid athlete, has not fought a single professional bout abroad.

But women’s boxing in the US is a different story. It tells a tale of female pugilists often looking outside their home base for better opportunities.

New York resident Alicia "Slick" Ashley lost her WBC Super Bantamweight belt in a very close match in Mexico City last September. Her challenger, Tijuana native Jackie "Aztec Princess" Nava, was Mexico’s best.

Ashley, 47, is one of several female boxing champions taking their chances south of the border, a telling indication that Mexico is embracing the sport in a way that its northern neighbor hasn’t in years. Experts go as far as wondering whether US women’s boxing will see better days or die a slow death.

Dual Benefits

Hailing from Jamaica, Ashley knew fighting the country’s darling in front of 8,500 raucous fans would be challenging. But the prize was worth it. In May, she earned $3,000 for a non-title match in New York. For her September 6th face-off against Nava, she pocketed ten times that amount, as well as the chance to compete against a world-class opponent.

Ashley and Nava co-headlined a card with Mexico’s top male boxers. Both bouts aired on one of Mexico’s premier television networks and took place in a 22,000-seat arena. The other large TV station in Mexico broadcast another boxing card headlined by women that same night.

In the US, women’s bouts are seldom televised or held in venues of comparable size. The Madison Square Garden, for example, last featured a women’s bout in 2009.

"Women’s boxing in the US is dying," former boxer Laura Serrano, who helped legalize the sport in Mexico City in 1998 and now lives in Las Vegas said.

Lack of Opportunity

In the past, women’s boxing in the US found "incredible support", so much so that Serrano herself headed north in search of better opportunities.

Lack of skills is not the issue. Ashley says US promoters tend to set up lopsided matches to preserve their fighters’ record, a common practice in the sport.

"In Mexico it’s like a ‘you wanna fight? I’m ready to fight’ kind of attitude," she added.

There are also increasingly less opportunities to fight for a belt in the US.

A November 8th bout between heavyweights Martha Salazar and Tanzee Daniel in California was the first WBC world female title fight in two years. In the same period, Mexico has hosted 14, while Argentina has held six.

With the win, Salazar is the only US female world champion in the sport’s four main sanctioning bodies.

Perhaps a sign of things to come, California native Ava Knight, who has fought eight out of 10 title fights in Mexico, defeated Mexico's Guadalupe Martinez for the WBC title on November 13th in Washington D.C. Both matches give the US a much-needed chance to regain some ground in the international women’s boxing scene.

Lack of TV Exposure

In the mid-to-late 90s, female professional boxing was booming. In 1996, overnight sensation Christy Martin fought on a Mike Tyson pay-per-view undercard. A few years later, Muhammad Ali’s daughter Laila was earning $15,000 for her early contests.

But all of that success revolved around a few "it girls", according to Malissa Smith, author of A History of Women’s Boxing, and those opportunities eventually died out.

In 2012, experts wondered whether female boxing’s historic debut in the London Games would breathe life back into the sport. It didn’t.

By the time women’s amateur boxing gained international recognition, professional female boxers were no longer on TV, said Smith.

Female boxers often blame the "old school" mentality that has ruled the big promotion companies for decades. They hope that as new blood enters the business, women will once again be brought to the forefront.

As women’s boxing takes a plunge, its main competitor, Mixed Martial Arts, is stealing the show in the US and abroad. The UFC’s first event in Mexico on November 15, 2014, was sold out in eight hours, becoming the "fastest sell-out" in the history of the venue.

Fighting MMA

It remains to be seen whether women’s boxing will catch up with MMA or forever live in the shadow of its younger, safer competitor. New Mexico native Holly Holm and Filipino American Ana Julaton, to name a few, made the switch to MMA last year.

To date, no fighter has died from a UFC fight. In women’s boxing, deaths are rare, but not impossible. The sport claimed its latest victim on October 25, 2014.

Most cab drivers in Mexico are able to name their favorite female boxer in a heartbeat while girls as young as five fill the local gyms after school. After all, boxing is the country’s second most popular sport after soccer.

Boxing in Mexico is still a male-dominated sport. At the highest levels, earnings of over $100,000 per bout have been reported. However, most female fighters struggle like their US counterparts. And the elephant in the room remains: Even the highest purse ever received by a woman pales in comparison with the multi-million dollar payouts to the men.

Despite the odds, Mexico remains a hotbed for women’s boxing. And as long as the sport continues to nosedive in the US, its southern neighbor will remain the best - and nearest - bet for top-level boxers like Ashley.

No New Baseball Stadium, says Governor

Culiacán: Sinaloa Governor Mario López Valdez said yesterday that following the sale of grupo Modelo there will be no new baseball stadium in Mazatlán.

He told media the land for the stadium located beside the Convention Center in the Marina had already been purchased but with the sale of the company the philosophy had changed.

The Governor said he also understood Mazatlán’s Venados baseball team was to be sold and depending on the new owners they would see (if the project would continue).

Aquarium Shark Tank Could be Open by Easter

In July, 2010 the construction of a shark tank at Mazatlán’s aquarium began. At that time, the Sinaloa government announced the tank would be open to the public at the end of that year or beginning of 2011. Fraught with construction and technical errors, the shark tank remains empty and has become a thorn in the side of both the Sinaloa and municipal governments.

Yesterday at a closed door meeting, Mazatlán Mayor Carlos Felton and Secretary of Public Works, José Luis Sevilla, agreed to move the project forward saying they see many positive aspects for the project and ways to solve current problems.

Including, they announced, a meeting with a technician today who investigated the installation and operation of the tank’s life support system to diagnose what is missing and how much it will cost to make the tank operational. With luck, said the Mayor, there will be sharks in the tank by Semana Santa (Easter).

And although the Secretary of Public Works stated there are no funds in the municipality´s budget for the project, the Mayor assured media Sinaloa Public Works has money earmarked for the aquarium and the Secretary of Tourism may have some remaining funds to contribute.

Municipal councilmen Humberto Becerra Batista, coordinator of the Comisión de Urbanismo, and Esperanza Kazuga Osaka, pointed out they were not included in the closed door meeting and called for transparency saying although they have insisted on being given information about the project they have not received any explanations.

What they have noticed, said Becerra Batista, is a project poorly executed which has not been explained to them. They want transparency and an accounting and called on the Sinaloa Auditor General´s office to follow up.

First of 69 Cruise Ships in 2015 Arrived in Port Yesterday

The first cruise ship of 2015, the Grand Princess with 2,830 passengers and 1,100 crew members, arrived in port yesterday at 6:07am.

According to the Sinaloa Secretary of Tourism press release, 69 cruise ships carrying a total of 165,000 tourists will dock in Mazatlán this year.

This is double the number from 2014 when 35 cruise ships arrived in port increasing the city´s economy by 110 million pesos.

Mazatlán’s Venados Baseball Team Out of the Playoffs

Mazatlán’s beloved AAA Pacific League Venados baseball team did not have a stellar year. They ended the regular season with a 31-36 record and squeaked into the playoffs only to lose their first four games and be eliminated.

President of the Venados de Mazatlán, Ismael Barros Cebreros, admitted to difficult and complicated regular and playoff seasons this year.

The truth is things did not go as we wished, he said, but every season is a chance to learn and next year they will improve in various aspects, particularly batting.

Tourists from U.S. up 19.3% in First Nine Months of 2014

México’s Ministry of Tourism told reporters that during the first nine months of 2014, 18.424 million American tourists traveled to México, an increase of 19.3 percent over the same period in 2013.

 

The number of tourists arriving by air during that period totaled 5.298 million, 13.7 percent more than during the January through September period in 2013.

Mazatlán, Sinaloa.- Un cierre de año positivo dejó el arribo doble de cruceros a la ruta del pacífico mexicano.

Pese a la recomendación negativa que las navieras hicieron sobre los riesgos de pasear por la ciudad, de no usar sus paseos precontratados, los extranjeros bajaron, caminaron, compraron, se tomaron fotos y hasta bebieron en la machado y zona dorada para empezar a festejar desde temprano la bienvenida del Año Nuevo.

Lo mejor está por venir, aseguró Rafael Lizárraga Favela, subsecretario de turismo de la Sectur Sinaloa, ante la programación ininterrumpida de los 69 arribos de buques turísticos para el 2015, a iniciar desde el próximo miércoles 7 de enero.

El funcionario estatal calificó al año de significativo por el regreso de los cruceros, además de tener hoteles llenos por la gran afluencia de turismo nacional e internacional que cerrará con broche de oro el 2014.

“Esto apenas empieza porque será un 2015, donde no se van a interrumpir los arribos de cruceros, en todos los meses, lo cual es muy bueno y positivo para los prestadores de servicios turísticos”.

Viene la consolidación.

Lizárraga Favela detalló que la temporada de cruceros que termina distribuyó aproximadamente 110 millones de pesos  entre toda la cadena de prestadores de servicios, comercio y empresarios turísticos. “Apenas empezamos la consolidación en materia de cruceros”, agregó.

Sobre todo porque de la agenda calendarizada para el 2015 buscarán convencer al resto de las navieras que faltan de volver, de que Mazatlán se está renovando y capacitando para presentar una oferta turística mayormente competitiva, abundó.

El mazatlán seguro.

Sobre la alerta de seguridad emitida por Estados Unidos contra Baja California Sur, el funcionario dijo desconocer la mala recomendación, pero confió en que serán los propios pasajeros quienes se den cuenta de que Mazatlán es amigable y seguro.

“Mazatlán está muy bien y nuestro destino seguirá mejorando porque está volviendo con fuerza y tuvo un excelente año”.

Mazatlán está lleno ahora, por los residentes que han llegado, los nacionales que vienen a celebrar el año nuevo y los cruceristas que le están dando un buen cierre de oro, describió el funcionario.

Adelantó que la Secretaría intensificara la capacitación e innovación del sector turístico para que Mazatlán esté listo al desarrollo y crecimiento de la actividad y las inversiones.

Además de preparar la promoción de Mazatlán en FITUR.

2014: The Cruise Ships Return

2014 will close in Mazatlán with the return of cruise ships calling on its port. A total of 35 cruise ships will have docked in the city during the year when the clock strikes midnight. Those ships will have brought 83,891 tourists with them along with their money to spend while they visit the Land of the Deer.

The Ministry of Tourism for Sinaloa told reporters that the return of cruise ships has benefited service providers, shops, tour operators, restaurants and a variety of vendors to the tune of 110 million pesos ($8.5 million).

Mazatlán’s Port Authority estimates that each arriving cruise ship brought with it an average of 2,400 passengers, the third highest tourists per ship in the last 14 years.

Along with the cruise passengers were a total of 32,875 people who crew the ships, many of whom disembarked for part of the day to visit and spend their money in Mazatlán.

Today the cruise ships Norwegian Star and Crown Princess will be docked in the city, as the last 6,336 cruise ship tourists for 2014 enjoy our city by the sea.

Mazatlán Ends 2014 with 100 Percent Hotel Occupation

It is estimated that holiday visitors will improve the port’s economy by 250 million pesos.

The final days of 2014 are coming to a close with Mazatlán hotels registering a 100 percent occupation rate and an “invasion” of tourists celebrating the New Year by the beach.

It is estimated that holiday visitors will improve the port´s economy by 250 million pesos, said the Association of Hotels and Motels president José Ramón Manguart Sánchez.

In addition, the year will end with the arrival in port today of the cruise ship MS Veendam and tomorrow the Norwegian Star and Crown Princess, with a combined total of 7,700 passengers.
Restaurants are reporting an increase of 90 percent in clientele and expect the bonanza to continue until January 2 when most tourists will return home.

According to Fecanaco, the “wave” of international winter tourists celebrating the New Year in Mazatlán has arrived from Texas, Arizona, Ohio and New Mexico, while national tourists are those taking advantage of the Corredor del Norte for easy highway access from the interior to coastal Mazatlán.

Federal Datatur statistics show Mazatlán will increase tourism by eight percent over last year representing approximately two million visitors to the port in 2014.

Mazatlán Exempt from US Tourist Alert Again

For the sixth year in a row, the United States State Department has evaluated the municipality of Mazatlán as being safe for American tourists and residents.

 

The department once again recommended Americans in Mazatlán take precautions if travelling in the municipality late at night or early morning and stated the Zona Dorada, Centro Historico and highway to the airport are the most secure.

However, the alert warned US citizens to avoid non-essential travel in State of Sinaloa.

In a travel alert issued on the government website on December 24, 2014, the State Department stated it considered Sinaloa a precautionary area for travel for Americans as Sinaloa is home to one of the most powerful criminal organizations in Mexico and criminal activities remain high throughout most of the State. Travel outside highway toll roads and in remote areas is dangerous and should be avoided, the alert warned.

As well, Americans were advised to take precautions travelling in neighbouring States such as Durango, Nayarit, Sonora and Baja California Sur.

Of Durango, the alert stated criminal activity on highways is a security problem and recommended travel outside the capital city only during the daytime.

With respect to Nayarit, the State department warned against non-essential travel in the border area of Sinaloa and Durango and all rural zones and secondary highways.

The December 24 alert stated Sonora is a region of drug and human trafficking and could be extremely dangerous for travellers. It also recommended caution when travelling in La Paz, BCS pointing out that in 2013 that State registered its highest murder rate since 1997.

Travelers arriving by air at various Mexican airports ought to see shorter waits in the immigration lineups now that additional agents have been trained to receive arrivals.

The National Immigration Institute (INM) has added more personnel at six international airports so as to reduce processing times.

At the Mexico City airport, where 240,000 foreigners arrive every month, the INM figures that three minutes are needed to process the documentation for each one. With 140 flights arriving daily, the 40 INM desks can handle up to 3,000 foreign visitors in the course of 25-30 minutes.

In Cancún the number of agents has been doubled to speed up the process.

Other airports affected are Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, Monterrey and Los Cabos.

Frequent American travelers to Mexico also have the option of using the Viajero Confiable, or Trusted Traveler program, if they are enrolled in the United States’ Global Entry system. Visitors insert their passports in a scanner and input other information in the process, which is supposed to take no more than three minutes.

The service is available at the airports in Mexico City, Los Cabos and Cancún.

The processing times are only those for immigration. Customs is even faster but not when you press the button and lose the red light lottery, which gets you a bag inspection.

Whale Population Increases off Coast of Mazatlán

Óscar Guzón Zataráin, director general of Onca Exploraciones in Mazatlán, said yesterday they are recording the presence of more humpback whales off the coast of the city every year.

The abundance of whale pods and baby whales off the shore of Mazatlán has increased in the last seven years he said, adding the reasons could be numerous.

Last year Onca marine biologists registered 22 baby whales, almost double the number observed in previous years.

Onca Exploraciones offers whale watching excursions for tourists from December 15 through April 15 during the four months the species resides in warmer water to reproduce before heading back to the United States, Canada and Alaska.

Profepa to Bring Order to Local Beaches

In an effort to stop irregular practices on national beaches such as unauthorized vendors and illegal sales of wild life, and to guaranty free access to beaches, on Saturday the Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Ambiente (Profepa) initiated in Mazatlán its environmental program “Playa en Regla Invierno 2014.”

The goal of the operation, said Profepa representative Gemi José González López at the inauguration of the program on Gaviotas Beach, is to respect environmental laws and regulations by not cordoning off sections of beaches for private use.

Other principal problems the program plans to regulate is the illegal sale of wild life (such as iguanas, birds) and beach commerce that is operating without the permission of the Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat).

The rental and operation of vehicles including seadoos and 4X4 dune buggies, paragliding and horse riding and any activities obstructing free access to beaches not authorized by Semarnat will be scrutinized, said Profepa personnel.

The Playa en Regla Invierno 2014 operation went into operation simultaneously in five Sinaloa locations including Mazatlán on Saturday and will conclude on January 5, 2015. (from Noroeste)

The number of foreign visitors in Mexico increased by 10.1% between January and October this year, with the total amount of visitors reaching 10.5 million tourists during the period.

The Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) reported in a statement that according to the National Migration Institute (INM), this figure exceeds the 9.6 million international visitors recorded during the same period in 2013.

The foreign exchange earnings from international visitors showed a positive development, reaching $13.34 billion in the tenth month of this year, according to the Bank of Mexico (Banxico). All this, the institution explained, is equivalent to 16.7% more than the $11.254 billion recorded during the same period last year.

In October, there was an inflow of $1.96 billion, $818 million of which came from tourists who came by air, which is an increase of 13.0% over October 2013. The central bank said that the average expenditure of travellers who came by air was $949.1, a figure that is 10.1% higher than the figure for January to October the previous year. In the first 10 months of 2014, tourist arrivals reached 23.2 million, a figure that is 18.6 % higher than arrivals in the country in the same period in 2013.

According to the Migration Policy Unit (PSU) of the Ministry of the Interior (Segob), the main source of tourists coming to Mexico is the United States, with 5.9 million visitors between January and October. They are followed by Canadian visitors with 1.3 million and travellers from the UK with 389,000.

As for tourists coming from emerging economies, the Tourism Ministry noted that tourist arrivals from Colombia increased by 24.7%, China by 24.4%, Venezuela by 9.1%, while for Brazil there was a 13.7% increase over the period January-October 2013.

Air Connectivity to Mazatlán to Increase

Francisco Córdova Celaya, the Secretary of Tourism for the state of Sinaloa, told reporters that for 2015 the number of flights into Mazatlán from the U.S. and Canada will increase 44 percent, while the number of passenger seats will increase by 39 percent.

The Secretary said that Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Sun Country Airlines and US Airways will be arriving in Mazatlán from six different cities in the U.S, increasing the number of flights into Mazatlán from 29 to 45 flights a week.

Córdova Celaya noted that next year American Airlines is expected to double the number of flights per week and the number of passenger seats, which are currently stands at 14 and 700, respectively.

Flights from Canada by the carriers WestJet Airlines and Sunwing Airlines with routes from Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Vancouver will grow by 4 percent next year to seven flights a week with a total of 1,149 passenger seats.

Westjest is projected to double the number of passenger seats in its Mazatlán routes in 2015.

6 mil turistas llegarán a Mazatlán

Mazatlan, Sinaloa.- Con cerca de 6 mil pasajeros procedentes de Estados Unidos y más de 2,100 tripulantes a bordo, mañana atracarán en el puerto de Mazatlán los cruceros Crown Princess y Norwegian Star.

Desde las 6:00 horas, la actividad turística en el puerto iniciará con el ingreso al muelle de la Administración Portuaria Integral (API) del buque Crown Princess, con 3,260 pasajeros y 1,141 tripulantes.

A las 7:00 horas arribará el crucero Norwegian Star, que transporta a un total de 2,683 pasajeros y 1,035 tripulantes procedentes de Los Ángeles, California.

Durante el mes de diciembre se tienen registrados 4 arribos dobles y uno triple, este último efectuado el pasado 10 de diciembre.

En lo que va del año 2014, a Mazatlán han arribado un total de 27 cruceros, restando todavía la llegada de otras 8 embarcaciones durante el mes de diciembre, con arribos dobles los días 17, 24 y 31 de diciembre.

De acuerdo con el listado preliminar de arribos para el año 2015, se tienen programados 69 llegadas de cruceros durante todos los meses del año.

Las líneas que seguirán operando en el puerto serán Carnival y Princess Cruises (con 24 arribos cada uno), Holland America (con 12 llegadas) y Norwegian (con 9 arribos).

Airport Celebrates Passenger No. 755,000

The 755,000^th passenger to arrive at Mazatlán’s Rafael Buelna airport this year was greeted yesterday afternoon with a celebration of balloons, confetti and gifts from stores within the terminal.

The surprised recipient of the celebration was Ana María Ramírez Arellano, a resident of Mazatlán, who had just returned from a vacation in Mexico City.

Administrator of the airport, José Luis Villanueva, told media 731,000 passengers passed through the airport in 2013 and although they were celebrating the 755,000^th yesterday this year was not yet over and he expected to exceed 760,000 by the end of December.

This post highlights some of the most important changes for vehicle Temporary Import Permit (TIP) holders:
1.   Since June 2010, foreigners with TIPs must notify Aduana each time they renew their INM permit, or when they exchange their FMM & consulate preauthorization for a Residente Temporal card.   THE Nov. 2014 CHANGE: ~ Aduana now allows us to send them our INM renewal notice EARLY.   Aduana now requires  either  the copy of the new INM card OR  ~ the NUT number ~ OR INM’s printed resolution authorizing the new card.  INM’s printed “resolution”  authorizing the new card is the paper they give you when you are approved for fingerprinting – because when we receive this INM “resolution”, it means  we are formally approved for the visa.     (Item 2.4)

Ironically, the INM “resolution” document only has your NUT printed on it, and does notshow your name or any personal identifying information.

This means we can now notify Aduana early – before receiving the INM card – using the 2 INM papers we get while processing our new INM visa (renewal) application.  If you have a TIP:   SAVE  that INM paper with the NUT number,  and  SAVE   that INM paper that approves you for fingerprinting.

Even though the new SAT/Aduana rules say we can use just the NUT,  savvy travelers note that it’s best to use both INM papers to renew your TIP:   If Aduana receives our request to renew out TIP with just the NUT paper, there can be a problem if Aduana checks the INM records before INM finishes approving your application.  When we have both INM’s  NUT paper and the notification of approval for fingerprinting, we have cleared that final key INM hurdle.

To avoid losing your deposit, good immigration attorneys are having their clients file their Aduana vehicle notification the very day they are notified they can place fingerprints, including a copy of the notification, as well as the pdf notification with no personal information.

2.  SAT/Aduana’s Second Big Nov. 2014 Change:  SAT/Aduana has changed to 15business days  for the grace period for filing our INM permit-renewal / TIP renewal (after INM card approval).   It is no longer 15 calendar days.    (Item 2.4)

3.   SAT/Aduana maximum duration periods for renewing TIPs now matches INM permit periods:  The new maximum periods that we can have TIP vehicles imported with Residente Temporal is up to 4 years.   Residente Temporal Estudiante’s TIPs are for the duration of their studies.    TIPs for FMM para “canje”  (foreigners entering Mexico using the 30 day canje preauthorized visa from a Mexican  consulate) are for up to 30 days, and can be extended up to 4 years when you get your Residente Temporal. (Item 2.2)

~  Vehicle deposits paid remain the same.
$400US for car models 2007 – 2015,
$300US for car models 2001 – 2006, and
$200US for cars 2000 and older. (Item 2.3)

~ The people allowed to drive our TIP cars are the same:  e.g. Tourists, Residente Temporales, and family members if the TIP holder is not in the car. (Item 2.8)

Julio Birrueta, director de la Oficina de Promoción del destino, informó que el puerto registra un aumento en de 23 por ciento en el flujo de turistas nacionales, esto debido a diversas acciones realizadas en favor del sector turístico, entre las que destacan la llegada de cruceros y la apertura de la autopista Mazatlán-Durango. Debido al buen repunte se incrementarán rutas aéreas.

Con la apertura de la autopista Mazatlán-Durango, el flujo de visitantes se incrementó en 34 por ciento.

 

 

El puerto de Mazatlán, Sinaloa, registra un aumento en de 23 por ciento en el flujo de turistas nacionales, esto debido a diversas acciones realizadas en favor del sector turístico, entre las que destacan la llegada de cruceros y la apertura de la autopista Mazatlán-Durango, entre otras.

Julio Birrueta, director de la Oficina de Promoción de Mazatlán, dijo que la llegada de cruceros ha contribuido a incrementar el número de visitantes extranjeros y se registran 35 llegadas, además de que ha reactivado de manera importante la actividad turística y comercial en los pueblos aledaños al destino, cuya única fuente económica hace algunos años era la agricultura.

Así, el reciente arribo del Crown Princes llevó al destino tres mil 102 turistas, además de visitas, recorridos y rutas turísticas hacia los pueblos El Quelite, Copala, Malpica y Concordia, informó.

Agregó que el turismo nacional ha venido incrementando su participación en los últimos dos años al representar el 70 por ciento del total de visitantes.

Esto, dijo, debido principalmente al incremento en el número de congresos y convenciones nacionales, así como al mayor flujo de visitantes de negocios y de turistas provenientes de estados aledaños.

Asimismo, con la apertura de la autopista Mazatlán-Durango, el flujo de visitantes se incrementó en 34 por ciento desde los estados vecinos en los últimos 12 meses, dada la mejor accesibilidad al destino y la reducción en el tiempo de manejo.

Los habitantes de Durango, Zacatecas, Coahuila y Nuevo León son los que más visitan en cada oportunidad el Puerto de Mazatlán, sobre todo en puentes y fines de semana, temporadas de alta ocupación que más se han visto incrementadas.

Abren rutas aéreas

En cuanto a las líneas aéreas, se espera en este mes llegadas internacionales de Delta Airlines proveniente de los Ángeles, California; además Westjet aumentará en 10 por ciento sus asientos con aviones de mayor capacidad y Sun Country duplicará su número de vuelos.

Así también Aeroméxico anunció dos nuevos vuelos desde el puerto de Mazatlán y Los Mochis hacia la ciudad de Tijuana, Baja California, con inicio de operaciones desde el 20 y 21 de diciembre.

Ante el crecimiento de la demanda turística al puerto, recientemente se inauguró en el Aeropuerto Internacional de Mazatlán “Gral. Rafael Buelna” la ampliación y remodelación del edificio terminal que incluye el crecimiento de la zona del ambulatorio y documentación de pasajeros y reconfiguración de espacios en sala de espera nacional.

Así también se construyeron áreas comerciales y de servicios, se incrementaron los servicios sanitarios, se reubicaron las oficinas administrativas, se modernizó la fachada principal del edificio terminal, así como dos nuevos pasillos telescópicos de última generación y una posición adicional en plataforma remota.
