Steamroller Print Project in El Centro Begins Tomorrow

Local print making artists invite the public to visit their open air steamroller print project beginning tomorrow through October 21 on the street between Miguel Alemán and Carnaval in El Centro from 9am to 2pm and 4pm to 8pm.

This is the third consecutive year when the artists will create large prints depicting themes of Dia de Muertos which will be hung in the Angela Peralta Theater beginning November 1 for free public viewing.

Gov’t announces funding to help boost ecotourism projects

Swimming with whale sharks, kayaking, river-rafting, diving and caving are among the myriad activities that Mexico offers in the way of ecotourism. With that in mind, the federal government has announced the allocation of 107 million pesos for its promotion in 14 areas of the country.

The money will be matched in equal amount by state governments.

The National Commission for Protected Areas estimates that ecotourism brought 2.5 million visitors last year, while 1,126 ecotourism businesses have been identified.

That figure is expected to grow in the coming years now that community businesses created in rural areas are in the process of developing their capacity and will be offering additional ecotourism attractions.

Along with its 174 protected natural areas Mexico is believed to have the largest number of species of reptile at 707, and comes in at second place for the number of mammal species, at 438.

It also ranks very high for species of amphibian and flora, which are found here in abundance.

The funding announcement was made at Adventure Travel Mexico 2014 by Carlos Joaquín González of the Tourism Secretariat. He said the ecotourism segment of the tourist industry is seen as having potential for innovative tourism products and for attracting new markets.

Interactive Museum Project Begins to Take Shape

The location has not been decided but the two options on the table are Marina Mazatlán and Av. Del Mar.

Proposed and executed by business entrepreneurs, an interactive museum in Mazatlán requiring a 400 million peso investment was presented yesterday to State and municipal authorities.

Ernesto Coppel Kelly, President of Grupo Pueblo Bonito, is in charge of the project including attracting private investors.

At the press conference yesterday were Mayor Carlos Felton, Secretary of Tourism Francisco Córdova Celaya and Marinela Servitje, president of the firm Sietecolores hired to create the museum concept.

Sietecolores has created some of the most important interactive museums in Mexico. For Mazatlán, the firm has proposed a bilingual, self-sufficient and attractive museum with large digital maps, big screens, international exhibition spaces and areas dedicated to the history of Mazatlán including a shrimp boat open to the public to explore.

Coppel Kelly told reporters the size has not yet been defined but they will know in six months once the business plan is completed which alone is costing investors 15 million pesos. Nor is the location decided but the two options on the table are Marina Mazatlán and Av. Del Mar.

With the official name of “Museo Mazatlán, Lugar de Encuentros,” a multi-coloured deer logo has been designed to reflect the city´s image.

The museum is expected to be financially self-sufficient by renting out commercial spaces and providing guided tours.
