The equinox, the astronomical event when the sun is at zenith over the
Equator, happens twice a year; around March 20 and September 22. This coming
March equinox signals the beginning of nature’s renewal in the Northern
Hemisphere.
It is this time of year when the attention of Mazatlecos is drawn to the
archaeological site Las Labradas. Christmas José Luis Andrade, director of
Sustainable Tourism and Development for the state of Sinaloa, said that this
year there will be cultural activities, but with a focus on recreation and rest
at Las Labradas.
He said that on Friday 21 events planned for Las Labradas include dancing and
yoremes songs, by the Cosalt group of Cosalá, food, a therapeutic and relaxing
massage area and meditation circles at the edge of the beach. In oral tradition
the word Mayo means “people of the shore.” The Mayos recognized
themselves as Yoremes, hence the yoremes songs.
Christmas José Luis Andrade said operators are putting together packages at a
cost of 300 pesos, which includes roundtrip transfer and the cost of entry fee
to Las Labradas
According to Francisco Rios, Sinaloa INAH delegate, Las Labradas is the first
archaeological area declared as such in Sinaloa.
He noted that the number of visitors coming to celebrate the March equinox at
Las Labradas has been growing, saying that four years ago about 300 people
visited the site, then the numbers grew to 700, then 1,500 and last year 2,300
attended the celebration. He said he expects a larger attendance this year.
