Beginning this month and in anticipation of the upcoming winter tourist season, flights to Mazatlán are on the rise.

According to Román Aguayo Hernández, head of the Autotransportes del Aeropuerto de Mazatlán, the first airline to add more flights to its schedule is US Air Ways, increasing from three per week to one a day from Phoenix. Aguayo Hernández commented that this connection is important for Mazatlán as it unites the port with larger cities in the United States.

However, he said, it is in November and December when charter airlines will begin to reactivate their winter tourist flights.

In November or latest in December, Westjet will return with daily charter flights from the Canadian cities of Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver, said Aguayo.

In June this year, the Sinaloa Secretary of Tourism announced Sun Country charters will double its operations to Mazatlán during the 2013 winter season with flights from Minneapolis.

Sun Country flights are scheduled to begin December 21 and end April 6, 2014, with a total of 4,774 seats on offer. In 2012, Sun Country flights brought 2,106 passengers to Mazatlán.
