Taking advantage of the last day of free travel on the recently opened Mazatlán-Durango highway, hundreds of Mazatlecans spent yesterday taking a pleasure drive along the super highway to enjoy panoramic views of the Sierras.

An estimated 3,000 vehicles were on the highway yesterday causing traffic bottlenecks and chaos when many drivers opted to pull over to take photos and videos, particularly of the El Sinaloense tunnel and Baluarte Bridge.

Durango Civil Protection agents and federal police began an operation to avoid accidents caused by families leaving their vehicles parked on a thru-lane and wandering onto the highway for a better photo angle.

Enrique Guzmán Sánchez of the Durango Civil Protection pointed out the highway was not a place to take photographs and as there were children present, they wanted to move vehicles parked on a thru-lane. There are other areas on the highway where drivers can pull off to admire the view without obstructing traffic, he pointed out, and many people did that.

Even buses, he said, were obstructing traffic and allowing passengers to disembark to enjoy the scenery.
In Mazatlán, tourists from Durango took advantage of the toll-free respite and flocked to the city´s beaches and sites raising hotel occupation to between 95 and 100 percent over the weekend.

Said Ramón Manguart Sánchez, head of the Tres Islas Hotel Association, “it seemed like summer or Semana Santa” in Mazatlán.

According to statistics from Datatur, between October 14 and 20, 29,529 tourists arrived in Mazatlán of which 25,520 were national visitors and 4,009 foreigners.
