Francisco Córdova Ceyala, Tourism Minister for the state
of Sinaloa, said that the government has offered cruise lines an
incentive if they call on the port of Mazatlán.
The Tourism Minister said, “The Governor [Mario López
Valdez] submitted to them [representatives of the cruise line Carnaval] a
proposal whereby the state would contribute $5,000 for each vessel to
offset the cost of fuel for calling on Mazatlán.”
Córdova Ceyala said the decision to offer the incentive
was made because in comparing the length of Caribbean cruise to one down
México’s Pacific coast, the latter is over 700 kilometers longer.
He added that security is not now the issue as to
whether a cruise ship will call on Mazatlán; it is purely an economic
decision.
It is estimated that each cruise ship that docks in
Mazatlán brings about 4 million pesos to the local economy through trade
and services.
